Wykamol Kontract turns Crypt into Community Centre

VICTORIAN CHURCH CONVERSION

 Holy Trinity

Residents around a Grade II listed Liverpool church have a spacious and dry new meeting place – created from a damp and dilapidated crypt using dampproofing materials from Wykamol.

The £1.65milion project is part of a major restoration of the Victorian-built Holy Trinity Church at Walton Breck. As well as having a much-improved place of worship at ground level, the former crypt is being transformed into a community centre, managed by Anfield and Breckside Community Council.

Ongoing plans include a reception area, disability lift, community hall, training kitchen and council meeting rooms across the whole footprint of the building as well as a new two-storey extension to the side – some 500sqm in total. Subcontractor Professional  Remedial Services, for main contractor McGoff & Byrne, applied Wykamol Kontract 20mm membrane to the floor and 8mm to the walls, all tied into a single piece for a complete seal from water ingress. Kontract 8mm was continued up to the roofline of the church because of the level of damp throughout the walls.

The floor membranes were also used to run a new drainage system under the floors as the church roof has internal gullies and no drainpipes or gutters. Additional steels have also been installed to the basement for extra strength and membrane wrapped round the steels for complete damp-proofing.

PRS Managing Director Robert Newman said: “We’ve been using membranes from Wykamol for over ten years. “In this case, it has meant a lot less preparation time, both saving on cost and enabling us to complete the process within three weeks as specified.”

Holy Trinity was chosen by English Heritage as part of its Repair Grants for Places of Worship scheme and the money for the transformation of the crypt and walls came from the European Regional Development Fund. A further £138,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund has gone into repairing the roof.
